Who We Are
Save Somali Marginalized and Minorities Organization (SASMO) is a non-political, non-partisan, and non-profit humanitarian and development NGO founded by intellectuals from marginalized and minority communities. SASMO is dedicated to addressing marginalization and advancing social justice, while empowering and advocating for the rights of disadvantaged groups and persons with disabilities. Through targeted humanitarian and development interventions, we strive to improve the living standards and overall well-being of the underserved communities.
Our Programs and Activities
Protection and human rights
The most vulnerable and exposed communities to human rights and protection-related incidents are the underserved, marginalized, and minority communities because they are susceptible to these incidents due to their socio-economic, legal, and political standing in society at large. Members of these communities are prone to all forms of human rights and protection concerns including sexual and gender based violence, violence against children, child soldiering, child labour, early and forced marriages and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). All these misfortunes happen due to their vulnerabilities and lack of strong political representation in the decision-making organs of the government and articulate and outspoken representatives. Advocacy and Communication
SASMO undertakes a wide range of advocacy and communication activities aimed at raising awareness on participation and inclusion, and formulation of policies and legal frameworks in social, economic and public life as well as humanitarian and development inclusion for the underserved communities. SASMO does so by conducting dialogues, seminars and workshops with the various stakeholders across Southwest State and beyond and engaging different actors and communities with its advocacy initiatives. These activities may include production and publication of dissemination materials on minority participation, working with the media for advocacy programs including radio and TV talk-shows, forums specifically aimed to advocate for minority rights and so on.
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion
The WASH interventions of SASMO aim to provide clean and safe drinking water, sustainable sanitation facilities and hygiene promotion among underserved communities who mostly live in impoverished IDP settlements. Improved water supply and sustainable sanitation management contribute to improved health and nutrition for vulnerable communities. SASMO undertakes the WASH interventions to achieve such results for underserved communities.

Mission
SASMO undertakes humanitarian and development advocacy and support activities aimed at participation and improving the socio-economic and psychosocial conditions of marginalized and minority communities through service provision of protection and human rights, advocacy and communication, livelihoods and food security, health and Nutrition, WASH, education as well as psychosocial interventions by forming partnerships with like-minded organizations in the humanitarian and development sectors in Somalia.
Philosophy
Save Somali Marginalized and Minorities Organization (SASMO) believes that all human beings, under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, have equal rights and deserve to live with dignity regardless of their race, culture, ethnicity, religion and political beliefs, and that no one should be subjected to marginalization and discrimination because of their identities, population size and social status in the society.
