SASMO

The Save Somali Marginalized and Minorities Organization (SASMO) is a non-political, non-partisan and non-profit humanitarian and development minority-led Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that was founded by a group of intellectuals from the marginalized and minority communities. SASMO seeks to empower the marginalized and minority groups in Somalia, advocate for their rights and improve the living standards and conditions of these communities through humanitarian and development interventions while ensuring their inclusion and participation in the humanitarian, development and public life from which they are often excluded.

In the humanitarian and development contexts in Somalia, the marginalized and minority communities are often faced with marginalization, exclusion and discrimination and do not have adequate access to humanitarian and development services provided by the humanitarian and development agencies. This dilemma is often linked to the impacting and victimization of the marginalized and minorities during the prolonged civil war in Somalia and the actions of gatekeepers in the internally displaced camps who deny the access opportunities to the affected populations from the marginalized and minority communities because the latter are most vulnerable and have little or no strong political representation which speaks out for the rights of the marginalized and minorities. It has been continually reported that most of the malnutrition rates of the affected population in Somalia happen to come from the marginalized and minority communities and this analysis attests to their lack of access to sustained food security and nutrition services in addition to health and WASH interventions. Furthermore, children from these groups have the highest rates of illiteracy, hardly go to school and are inclined to exploitive child labour. They are also faced with the protection concerns of gender based violence and violence against children as many of its (female and child) members do menial jobs and work as housemaids and child labourers, which makes them susceptible to sexual and gender based violence and violence against children because of their socio-economic vulnerabilities and status.

Established in 2020 and based in Baidoa, the temporary seat of Southwest State of Somalia, the Save Somali Marginalized and Minorities Organization (SASMO) works to advocate for the rights of the marginalized and minorities in Southwest State of Somalia and beyond, and to improve their socio- economic conditions and psychosocial well-being through humanitarian and development interventions while it ensures the inclusion and participation of these groups in the ongoing and planned beneficiary humanitarian and development and public life activities by forming partnerships with the like- minded organizations.
